While cataloging photographic albums from the collection of the former Peabody Museum, I discovered two intriguing albums of photographs taken in New Hebrides (Vanuatu), the Solomon Islands, and East Africa. The photos are beautiful, clear gelatin silver prints depicting the indigenous peoples and animals of those countries along with Martin and Osa Johnson. I did some research and found that Martin (1884-1937) and Osa (1894-1953) Johnson were American adventurers, photographers, naturalists, authors, and documentary filmmakers. Read more

It’s Bring Your Dog to Work Day! Unfortunately, but with very good reason, we can’t bring dogs into the Phillips Library (“My dog ate the Derby Family Papers” wouldn’t be met with too much sympathy…).  To console ourselves, we searched throughout our collections for pictures of dogs to share with anyone else feeling blue over not having a four-legged companion snoozing under their desk today.
