The Peabody Essex Museum mourns the December 18th passing of Nancy Babson Tieken, a vibrant spirit, beloved colleague and generous supporter of the arts. Ms. Tieken was a PEM Overseer and Trustee, as well as a visionary contributor to the FreePort contemporary art initiative, funding several art acquisitions for the museum and endowing the position of the curator.

Ms. Tieken had been involved in the art world her entire life, starting with her education at Radcliffe/Harvard where she earned an MFA. She worked for more than 25 years as an educator, curator and author and relished being on staff at museums because that, she said, "is where the action is."

Her professional career included positions and trusteeships at the Los Angeles County Museum, the Currier Museum in New Hampshire, the Institute of Contemporary Art in Boston, The National Portrait Gallery in Washington DC, the Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego in California, and the Denver Art Museum. She will be dearly missed at every institution she touched.

Growing up visiting the Art Institute of Chicago each Saturday, Nancy came to think of museums as places that told wonderful stories. For the rest of her life, she worked to ensure that this would always be so.
